Lombok Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling, as visa policies and entry requirements are subject to change.
Lombok, part of Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara province, welcomes international travelers through Lombok International Airport (Bandara Internasional Lombok/LOP) and seaports. As an Indonesian territory, Lombok follows Indonesia's national immigration policies, which offer visa-free entry, visa on arrival, or electronic visa options depending on your nationality and purpose of visit. The island has become increasingly accessible to international tourists, with streamlined entry procedures designed to encourage tourism while maintaining security standards. The immigration process in Lombok is generally straightforward for tourists from most Western countries. Upon arrival at Lombok International Airport, travelers will proceed through immigration control, collect baggage, pass through customs, and enter the arrival hall. The entire process typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on flight volumes. It's essential to have all required documentation ready, including a valid passport with at least six months validity from your date of entry, proof of onward travel, and sufficient funds for your stay. Before traveling to Lombok, ensure you understand which visa category applies to your nationality and travel purpose. Indonesia has been modernizing its visa system, introducing electronic visa options and expanding visa-free access for tourism purposes. However, requirements can change, and travelers should verify current regulations with Indonesian immigration authorities or their nearest Indonesian embassy before departure.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Lombok International Airport or seaports, all international travelers must complete immigration and customs procedures. The process is designed to be efficient, but having all documents prepared in advance will expedite your entry.

1
1. Health Screening (if applicable)
Depending on current health regulations, you may be required to show health documentation or undergo temperature screening. Check current requirements before travel.
2
2. Visa on Arrival Payment (if applicable)
If you require VOA and didn't obtain e-VOA, proceed to the VOA payment counter before immigration. Have exact payment ready (IDR 500,000 or USD 35). Receive payment receipt to present at immigration.
3
3. Immigration Control
Join the appropriate queue (Indonesian nationals, ASEAN, or Foreign Nationals). Present your passport, completed arrival card (if required), visa documentation, and return ticket. Immigration officer will verify documents, may ask questions about your visit, take your photo and fingerprints, and stamp your passport with entry permit.
4
4. Baggage Claim
Collect your checked luggage from the designated carousel. Report any missing or damaged baggage to airline representatives immediately.
5
5. Customs Declaration
If you have goods to declare or are carrying amounts exceeding duty-free allowances, proceed to the red channel and complete customs declaration. Otherwise, proceed through green channel (nothing to declare). All luggage may be subject to x-ray screening or physical inspection.
6
6. Exit to Arrivals Hall
After clearing customs, exit to the public arrivals area where you can arrange transportation, exchange currency, or meet contacts.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry into Indonesia. Must have at least 2 blank pages for stamps. Machine-readable passport required.
Return/Onward Ticket
Proof of departure from Indonesia within your permitted stay period. Can be flight, ferry, or cruise ship ticket. Immigration may refuse entry without proof of onward travel.

Visa approval (if obtained in advance), e-VOA confirmation, or payment for VOA. Keep digital and printed copies.
Accommodation Confirmation
Hotel booking, rental agreement, or invitation letter from host. May be requested by immigration officers.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Bank statements, credit cards, or cash to demonstrate ability to support yourself during stay. Rarely checked but may be requested.
Arrival Card (if required)
Immigration arrival/departure card may be distributed on flight or available at airport. Complete accurately with blue or black pen.
Health Documentation (if applicable)
Vaccination certificates, health declarations, or COVID-19 related documents as per current requirements.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all documents easily accessible in a travel folder, not packed in checked luggage. This includes passport, visa, tickets, and accommodation confirmations.
Carry small denominations of USD or IDR for VOA payment. While card payment is sometimes available, cash is more reliable. ATMs are available after clearing immigration.
Take a photo or screenshot of your e-VOA approval and keep it on your phone in case you can't print it. However, having a printed copy is recommended.
Be prepared to show your return ticket. Have it readily available on your phone or printed. Immigration officers regularly check this.
Dress appropriately and be respectful during immigration process. Indonesia is a conservative country, and first impressions matter.
If extending your visa, visit the immigration office in Mataram (Kantor Imigrasi Kelas I TPI Mataram) at least one week before your visa expires. Bring passport photos, copies of passport, proof of accommodation, and extension fee.
Keep your passport and entry stamp safe throughout your stay. You'll need to present it when departing and may need to show it at hotels or when booking domestic flights.
Download offline maps and have accommodation address in Indonesian language, as English proficiency varies among immigration and customs staff.

Customs & Duty-Free

Indonesian customs regulations apply to all arrivals in Lombok. Travelers must declare items exceeding duty-free allowances and are prohibited from bringing certain items into the country. Customs officers may inspect luggage, and penalties for violations can be severe, including fines, confiscation, or imprisonment.

Alcohol
1 liter of alcoholic beverages per adult
Only for travelers aged 21 and over. Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and alcohol is regulated. Some areas may have local restrictions. Commercial quantities are prohibited.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes OR 25 cigars OR 100 grams of tobacco products per adult
Only for travelers aged 18 and over. E-cigarettes and vaping devices are technically illegal in Indonesia but enforcement varies. Bringing them is at your own risk.
Currency
IDR 100,000,000 (Indonesian Rupiah) or equivalent of USD 10,000 in foreign currency
Amounts exceeding these limits must be declared on arrival using customs declaration form. Failure to declare can result in confiscation and penalties. Keep declaration form for departure.
Gifts/Goods
Personal goods and gifts up to USD 250 per person (USD 1,000 per family) in value
Must be for personal use and not for commercial purposes. New items in packaging may be questioned. Keep receipts for expensive items.
Perfume
Reasonable amount for personal use
Generally interpreted as 1-2 bottles. Commercial quantities will be taxed.

  • Firearms, ammunition, explosives, and weapons - without proper permits and authorization
  • Pornographic materials - including magazines, videos, and digital content
  • Printed materials in Chinese characters - subject to screening for content
  • Items with communist symbols or propaganda materials
  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, and plants - without phytosanitary certificate and agricultural inspection
  • Live animals and animal products - without veterinary health certificate and quarantine approval
  • Counterfeit goods and pirated media
  • Radio transmitters and communication equipment - without proper permits
  • Endangered species and products made from them - protected under CITES regulations

Restricted Items

  • Medications - Prescription medications allowed in reasonable quantities with doctor's prescription and original packaging. Psychotropic medications require special permit from Indonesian health authorities. Declare all medications.
  • Drones and aerial photography equipment - Require permit from Ministry of Transportation. May be held at customs until permit obtained. Commercial use strictly regulated.

Health Requirements

Health requirements for entering Lombok follow Indonesian national regulations. While there are limited mandatory vaccination requirements for most travelers, several vaccinations are strongly recommended. Health regulations can change rapidly, particularly regarding pandemic-related measures, so verify current requirements before travel.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required ONLY if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country (parts of Africa and South America). Certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival. Not required for travelers from non-endemic countries.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to potential exposure through food and water
  • Typhoid - Recommended for most travelers, especially those visiting smaller cities or rural areas
  • Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
  • Japanese Encephalitis - Recommended for travelers spending extended time in rural areas, especially during rainy season
  • Rabies - Recommended for travelers involved in outdoor activities, working with animals, or visiting remote areas where medical care is limited
  • Routine vaccinations - Ensure MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), polio, and COVID-19 vaccinations are up to date
  • Dengue - Dengue vaccine (Dengvaxia) may be considered for travelers with previous dengue infection. Consult travel medicine specialist.

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is not mandatory for entering Lombok but is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Medical facilities in Lombok are limited compared to major Indonesian cities, and serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to Bali or Jakarta. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation, hospitalization, and repatriation. Many policies exclude certain activities like scooter riding without proper license, so read terms carefully. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers accessible.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly, particularly regarding COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Before traveling, check the latest requirements on the Indonesian Ministry of Health website and your government's travel advisory site. Requirements may include vaccination certificates, negative test results, health declarations, or quarantine measures. Download any required health apps or prepare digital health certificates as specified by current regulations. Monitor for updates in the weeks before departure, as requirements can change with little notice.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport (cannot be included on parent's passport). Same visa requirements apply regardless of age. Children under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from absent parent(s), including parent's contact information and photocopy of parent's passport/ID. If traveling with one parent, letter from other parent is recommended. For children traveling with non-parents (relatives, school groups), notarized authorization letter from both parents is required. Single parents should carry child's birth certificate and, if applicable, sole custody documents. Keep multiple copies of all documents. Indonesian immigration may question adults traveling with children to prevent child trafficking.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Indonesia is complex and requires advance planning (start 3-6 months before travel). Required documents: Import Permit from Indonesian Quarantine Authority (apply minimum 2 months in advance), Veterinary Health Certificate from country of origin (issued within 7 days of travel), Rabies Vaccination Certificate (administered between 30 days and 12 months before travel), Microchip documentation (ISO 11784/11785 compliant). Pets must undergo quarantine period (typically 14-30 days) at designated facility in Jakarta or Surabaya - note that Lombok does not have international pet quarantine facility. After quarantine clearance, pets can be transported to Lombok. Only dogs and cats are generally permitted as pets. Certain breeds may be restricted. Process is expensive (USD 500-2000+) and stressful for animals. Many travelers opt to leave pets at home or use professional pet relocation services. Contact Indonesian Quarantine Authority (Badan Karantina) for current requirements.

Extended Stays

Tourist VOA allows 30 days, extendable once for additional 30 days (60 days total maximum). For stays longer than 60 days, you must obtain a different visa type before arriving in Indonesia. Options include: Social-Cultural Visa (B211A) - allows 60 days, extendable up to 4 times for 60 days each (maximum 180 days total), requires sponsor in Indonesia and must be arranged before travel through embassy or visa agent (cost: USD 100-300). Limited Stay Visa (VITAS) - for work, retirement, or family purposes, requires extensive documentation and sponsor. Retirement Visa - available for retirees over 55 with proof of pension income (minimum USD 1,500/month), requires Indonesian sponsor and guarantor. Business Visa - for work-related activities, requires sponsoring company. Cannot change visa type while in Indonesia - must exit country and re-enter with new visa. Working on tourist visa is illegal and can result in deportation and ban. For digital nomads staying long-term, consider visa runs (exiting and re-entering) to Singapore or Malaysia, though this is technically against visa regulations if done repeatedly. Indonesia is developing digital nomad visa options - check current status.

Overstaying Your Visa

Overstaying your visa in Indonesia is a serious violation with significant consequences. Penalties include: IDR 1,000,000 per day fine for overstay, detention at immigration facility, deportation at your expense, ban from re-entering Indonesia (typically 6 months to permanent depending on overstay duration), and potential criminal prosecution for extended overstays. If you realize you've overstayed, go immediately to immigration office in Mataram with passport, explanation, and payment. Do NOT attempt to leave through airport with expired visa - you will be detained. If circumstances prevented timely departure (medical emergency, natural disaster), bring supporting documentation. Immigration may show leniency for short overstays (1-2 days) with valid reasons and immediate self-reporting. Extended overstays (60+ days) result in automatic detention and deportation proceedings. Keep track of your visa expiration date and apply for extensions well in advance (at least 7-10 days before expiry). Set phone reminders. If you need to stay longer than your visa allows, exit Indonesia before visa expires and obtain proper visa type.

Lost or Stolen Passport

If your passport is lost or stolen in Lombok, take immediate action: 1) Report to local police station (Polsek) and obtain police report (required for embassy and immigration). 2) Contact your embassy or consulate in Jakarta or Bali immediately to report loss and begin emergency travel document process. 3) Visit immigration office in Mataram with police report to report passport loss and cancel entry stamp. 4) Apply for emergency travel document or replacement passport through your embassy (may require travel to Bali or Jakarta for biometrics/interview). 5) Obtain exit permit from immigration office with emergency travel document. Process can take 1-2 weeks and is expensive (USD 100-300+ for emergency document). Keep photocopies and digital scans of passport ID page and visa stamp separately from passport. Consider leaving copies with family/friends at home. Register with your embassy's travel program before departure. Travel insurance may cover some costs of replacement documents and extended accommodation. Cannot exit Indonesia without valid passport or emergency travel document and proper exit clearance from immigration.

Dual Nationals

Indonesia does not recognize dual nationality for its citizens (with limited exceptions for children until age 18). Indonesian citizens, even with foreign passport, must enter and exit Indonesia using Indonesian passport. Foreign nationals with Indonesian ancestry or former Indonesian citizenship should enter on their foreign passport. If you were born in Indonesia or have Indonesian parents, verify your citizenship status before travel as you may be considered Indonesian citizen. Use the same passport for entry and exit. If you entered on passport A, you must exit on passport A. Switching passports during stay causes immigration complications. If holding both Indonesian and foreign passport, declare this if asked by immigration. Some countries (like Australia, UK, Canada) allow dual citizenship - check your country's policy. Having multiple passports can be useful for visa-free travel but ensure you comply with each country's entry/exit requirements.
