Lombok Entry Requirements

Lombok Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed March 2026. Always verify current requirements with official Indonesian government sources (imigrasi.go.id) and your country's embassy before traveling, as policies can change without advance notice.
Lombok, Indonesia's second most-visited island after Bali, is accessible to international travelers through Lombok International Airport (BIL) in Praya, which receives direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and major Indonesian hubs. As part of Indonesia, Lombok follows the country's national immigration framework, which has been significantly liberalized in recent years to support tourism. Most visitors from Western countries, Australia, and major Asian nations can obtain a Visa on Arrival or an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) directly at the airport, making the entry process straightforward for the vast majority of travelers. Upon landing in Lombok, travelers pass through immigration at BIL, where the process is generally efficient. Those using the e-VOA benefit from a dedicated fast-track lane, which can significantly reduce wait times during busy periods. All visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay and possess a confirmed onward or return ticket. Lombok's immigration officers are accustomed to international arrivals, and the airport has English-language signage throughout the arrivals hall. Lombok sits within the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province and falls under the authority of Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration. Travelers should be aware that immigration rules can change with relatively short notice, and it is always advisable to verify current requirements with the Indonesian embassy in your home country or via the official imigrasi.go.id website before departing. This is important for nationals of countries that may have recently been added to or removed from the Visa on Arrival list.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Indonesia operates a tiered visa system for Lombok and all other entry points. Most international visitors fall into one of three categories: visa-free entry (primarily ASEAN nations and select partners), Visa on Arrival or e-VOA (the majority of Western and developed-nation passport holders), or visa required (nationals who must apply in advance at an Indonesian embassy or consulate). The standard tourist allowance for VoA holders is 30 days, extendable once for an additional 30 days at a local immigration office.

Visa-Free Entry
30 days (non-extendable)

Citizens of ASEAN member states and a small number of bilateral partner countries may enter Indonesia, including Lombok, without obtaining a visa. This is a non-extendable, tourism-only exemption.

Includes
Brunei Darussalam Cambodia Laos Malaysia Myanmar Philippines Singapore Thailand Vietnam Chile Ecuador Hong Kong SAR Macau SAR Morocco Peru Taiwan

Visa-free entry is strictly for tourism and short visits. Working, studying, or conducting business on a visa-free entry is prohibited. ASEAN nationals should carry proof of return travel. The list of eligible countries is subject to change. Check imigrasi.go.id for the current official list before traveling.

Visa on Arrival (VoA) / Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA)
30 days, extendable once for an additional 30 days at any Indonesian immigration office (total maximum stay: 60 days)

Citizens of approximately 86 countries are eligible to obtain a Visa on Arrival at Lombok International Airport, or to apply in advance for an e-VOA online before traveling. The e-VOA is strongly recommended as it allows use of dedicated fast-track lanes and avoids queuing at the VoA counter on arrival. Both options grant identical rights and duration of stay.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Australia New Zealand Canada Germany France Netherlands Spain Italy Portugal Sweden Norway Denmark Finland Switzerland Austria Belgium Japan South Korea China India Russia Brazil South Africa Israel Most European Union member states
How to Apply: For e-VOA: Apply online at molina.imigrasi.go.id at least 48 hours before departure. Upload a passport photo and passport data page, pay the fee, and receive an approval letter by email. Print the approval letter or save it on your phone and present it at the e-VOA counter on arrival. For Visa on Arrival at the airport: proceed directly to the VoA payment counter in the arrivals hall, pay the fee (cash or card accepted), and receive your visa sticker before proceeding to the immigration desks.
Cost: IDR 500,000 (approximately USD 30, 35, subject to exchange rate fluctuations). The fee is the same for both on-arrival and e-VOA.

Extensions must be applied for at the Mataram Immigration Office (Kantor Imigrasi Mataram) on Lombok before your initial 30-day period expires. Bring your passport, VoA/e-VOA documentation, a passport photo, and the extension fee. Overstaying your visa carries fines and potential deportation. Do not overstay.

Visa Required
60 days (B211A tourist visa, extendable up to 4 times for an additional 30 days each, maximum 180 days)

Nationals of countries not covered by visa-free entry or the VoA/e-VOA scheme must apply for a visa in advance at the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate. Tourist visas (B211A) are most commonly issued for single or multiple entries.

How to Apply: Apply at the Indonesian embassy or consulate in your home country. Submit a completed application form, passport valid for 6+ months, recent passport photos, proof of sufficient funds, confirmed round-trip airline tickets, and hotel/accommodation bookings. Processing time is typically 3, 7 business days but varies by location. Some consulates now accept applications through an online portal. Check the specific consulate's website.

Nationals of certain countries may face additional scrutiny or documentary requirements. Contact the Indonesian embassy in your home country well in advance of travel to confirm current requirements. Visa issuance is at the discretion of Indonesian immigration authorities.

Arrival Process

Arriving at Lombok International Airport (IATA: BIL) in Praya, travelers proceed through a clearly marked arrivals process. The airport is modern but smaller than Bali's Ngurah Rai, so wait times are generally shorter. During peak travel periods (July, August and December, January coinciding with optimal Lombok weather), immigration queues can be longer, so having your documents prepared in advance will speed up the process considerably.

1
Disembark and follow arrivals signage
Exit the aircraft and follow signs for 'Arrivals' and 'Immigration.' The airport has clear English-language signage. Health screening areas (if applicable) are encountered first.
2
Visa acquisition (if applicable)
If you hold an e-VOA approval letter, proceed to the dedicated e-VOA counter to have your visa sticker affixed. If you require a Visa on Arrival, proceed to the VoA payment counter first, pay the IDR 500,000 fee, and receive your visa sticker. If you are visa-free or hold a pre-issued visa, proceed directly to the immigration desks.
3
Immigration inspection
Present your passport (with visa sticker if applicable), completed arrival card (distributed on the aircraft or available at the immigration hall), and your return or onward travel ticket when requested. The officer will photograph and fingerprint you as part of biometric enrollment. Answer questions about your intended stay, accommodation, and purpose of visit calmly and truthfully.
4
Baggage claim
Proceed to the baggage carousel indicated on the arrivals board. Lombok's airport is compact, so baggage typically arrives quickly.
5
Customs inspection
All arriving passengers must pass through customs. If you have nothing to declare, proceed through the green channel. If you are carrying items above duty-free limits, currency over USD 10,000 equivalent, or other declarable goods, use the red channel and present your customs declaration form.
6
Exit to arrivals hall
Once cleared, you enter the public arrivals hall where pre-booked hotel shuttles, taxi counters, and money changers are located. Use official airport taxis or pre-booked transfers rather than unlicensed drivers offering services outside the terminal.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Indonesia. Ensure it has at least two blank pages for visa stamps.
Return or onward ticket
Proof that you will depart Indonesia before your visa expires. Immigration officers may request to see this, and airlines may deny boarding without it.
Accommodation confirmation
Hotel booking confirmation for at least your first few nights in Lombok. Useful if asked about your plans by immigration.
e-VOA approval letter (if applicable)
Printed or digital copy of the approval email received after completing the online e-VOA application. Present at the dedicated e-VOA counter before reaching the main immigration desks.
Arrival card
Distributed on the aircraft or available in the immigration hall. Must be completed before reaching the immigration desk. Some airlines distribute these digitally. Confirm with your carrier.
Customs declaration form
Required for all arriving passengers. Declare any goods above duty-free allowances, currency above USD 10,000 equivalent, or restricted items.
Proof of sufficient funds
While not always checked, Indonesia's immigration guidelines recommend being able to demonstrate adequate funds for your stay, typically USD 1,000 equivalent or credit cards. Officers may ask.
Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if applicable)
Required only if you are arriving from or have transited through a country designated as a yellow fever endemic zone in the past 9 days. See health requirements section.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Apply for the e-VOA at least 48, 72 hours before departure at molina.imigrasi.go.id to avoid the VoA queue and benefit from the faster dedicated lane at BIL.
Have your passport, e-VOA letter, return ticket, and hotel booking readily accessible on your phone or in a travel document wallet before reaching immigration, fumbling through bags slows the queue.
Indonesia uses biometric entry: fingerprinting and photography are mandatory. Do not refuse or cover fingers. The process takes about 30 seconds per person.
Complete your arrival card on the aircraft using a ballpoint pen. If you make an error, request a new form rather than crossing out entries, as corrections can cause delays.
Carry small denomination USD, AUD, or GBP bills for the VoA fee in case card payment is temporarily unavailable. The IDR 500,000 fee is approximately USD 30, 35.
If planning a Lombok itinerary of more than 30 days, budget time to visit the Mataram Immigration Office early in your stay, ideally in the first two weeks, as extensions require an appointment and processing time.
Dress modestly when passing through immigration; Lombok is predominantly Muslim and conservative dress is respectful and well-received.

Customs & Duty-Free

Indonesia's customs regulations apply uniformly to Lombok as part of the national territory and are enforced by the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (Bea Cukai). Indonesia takes customs enforcement seriously, regarding narcotics, which carry severe mandatory penalties including the death penalty. Declare any items you are uncertain about. Customs officers are generally pragmatic with genuine travelers, and voluntary declaration is always preferable to being found with undeclared goods.

Alcohol
1 liter total
Must be in the original sealed packaging and for personal consumption only. Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country. Public intoxication is unacceptable in many areas, and alcohol is not widely sold in all parts of Lombok outside tourist zones.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes, OR 25 cigars, OR 100 grams of other tobacco products
Per adult traveler. Tobacco brought in excess of these limits is subject to import duties. Vaping devices and e-cigarettes may be subject to restrictions. Check current regulations as Indonesia has been tightening e-cigarette rules.
Currency
No limit on foreign currency; IDR 100 million (approximately USD 6,000) maximum in Indonesian Rupiah
Foreign currency (cash) of USD 10,000 equivalent or more must be declared on the customs form regardless of denomination. Failure to declare is a customs violation. There is no limit on credit/debit card balances.
Gifts and Personal Goods
Up to USD 500 equivalent in value per traveler
Personal effects (clothing, toiletries, electronics for personal use) are generally admitted duty-free. Goods clearly intended for resale or in commercial quantities are subject to import duties even if below the USD 500 threshold.
Electronic devices
Reasonable quantity for personal use
Bringing two laptops and a camera, for example, is normal and expected for travelers. Bringing 10 smartphones suggests commercial import and may attract duties and questioning.

Prohibited Items

  • Narcotics, psychotropic substances, and illegal drugs, Indonesia has some of the harshest drug laws in the world. Possession can result in life imprisonment or the death penalty
  • Firearms and ammunition without prior written authorization from Indonesian authorities
  • Pornographic materials of any kind
  • Counterfeit currency or goods
  • Endangered species, products derived from protected wildlife (CITES-regulated items), or items made from coral, turtle shells, or similar materials without proper certification
  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed plant materials without phytosanitary certificates (to prevent introduction of agricultural pests)
  • Radioactive materials without authorization

Restricted Items

  • Prescription medications, carry the original prescription and only a supply consistent with personal medical need (typically no more than 90 days' supply); controlled substances require prior import approval from Indonesia's National Narcotics Board (BNN)
  • Fresh meat and animal products, require veterinary health certificates from the country of origin
  • Drones, technically require registration and flight permits in Indonesia. Bring documentation of drone registration from your home country
  • Satellite phones, require prior authorization from Indonesia's Ministry of Communications
  • Diving equipment with compressed gas cylinders, cylinders must be empty for air transport and may require declaration
  • Photographic equipment in commercial quantities, a single DSLR and lenses is personal use; a full broadcast-quality film crew setup may require a carnet or temporary import permit

Health Requirements

Indonesia, including Lombok, currently has no mandatory COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements for international arrivals (as of early 2026). Health entry requirements are focused primarily on yellow fever vaccination for travelers arriving from endemic regions. However, there are several vaccinations and health precautions strongly recommended by international health authorities for travel to Lombok given the regional disease environment.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate, required ONLY for travelers arriving from or having transited through countries designated as yellow fever endemic zones (primarily parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America) within the 9 days prior to arrival. The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP/'yellow card') must be presented at the port of entry.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A, recommended for all travelers. Contracted through contaminated food and water
  • Typhoid, recommended for travelers planning to eat street food or travel to rural areas of Lombok
  • Hepatitis B, recommended for travelers who may have contact with blood or bodily fluids, receive medical care, or travel frequently
  • Tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap), ensure routine vaccinations are up to date before any international travel
  • Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), ensure you have had two doses if born after 1957
  • Rabies, recommended for outdoor enthusiasts, trekkers planning to climb Rinjani, or those with potential exposure to animals
  • Japanese encephalitis, considered for travelers spending extended time in rural areas, near rice paddies
  • Malaria prophylaxis, Lombok has areas with malaria risk, in rural and forested zones away from the main tourist areas of Kuta Lombok and Senggigi. Consult a travel medicine specialist about prophylaxis options at least 4, 6 weeks before departure

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is not legally required to enter Indonesia. But is very strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Lombok range from adequate in Mataram (the provincial capital) to very basic in rural areas. Serious medical conditions typically require evacuation to Bali (Denpasar) or Singapore, which can cost USD 10,000, 50,000+ without insurance. Ensure your policy covers emergency medical evacuation, hospitalization, and activity-specific coverage if you plan to surf, climb Mount Rinjani, or dive. Several insurers offer 'adventure travel' policies suited to Lombok's activities.

Current Health Requirements: As of March 2026, there are no COVID-19 vaccination, testing, or documentation requirements for entry to Indonesia. This situation can change. Always check the latest requirements via the official Indonesian immigration website (imigrasi.go.id), your government's travel advisory portal, and the airline's travel requirements checker before your departure date, as airlines may impose requirements independent of government policy.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children require their own valid passport. They cannot travel on a parent's passport. Children from countries eligible for VoA/e-VOA still require their own VoA/e-VOA entry, the fee is the same per person regardless of age. If a child is traveling with only one parent or with a non-parent guardian, Indonesian immigration may request a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s) along with the child's birth certificate. Single parents should carry the child's birth certificate and, if applicable, court documentation establishing sole custody. These precautions are important given Indonesia's attention to child trafficking concerns.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets (dogs, cats) into Indonesia requires advance preparation of 3, 6 months minimum. Requirements include: a current rabies vaccination (at least 14 days old, no more than 12 months old at time of entry), microchip implantation (ISO 11784/11785 standard), an official health certificate issued by a government veterinarian in your home country within 14 days of travel, a rabies antibody test (FAVN or ELISA) showing sufficient titer levels from an approved laboratory, and prior import permit from Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan). Lombok is not a primary pet import point. Routing through Jakarta (Soetta Airport) may be required. Contact Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture directly for current requirements as these change periodically. Note: Lombok as a predominantly Muslim area means dogs may face some social restrictions in certain areas.

Extended Stays Beyond 60 Days

VoA/e-VOA allows a maximum of 60 days (30 day initial + one 30-day extension). For longer stays, travelers must obtain an appropriate visa before arriving or convert to a different visa category. Options include: the Social/Cultural Visa (B211B, up to 180 days, requires a local sponsor or cultural organization invitation), the Multiple Entry Business Visa (for business activities), or a Limited Stay Permit (ITAS) for those with employment, investment, or retirement purposes. The ITAS/KITAS process is complex and typically requires a local sponsor and the services of an immigration agent or lawyer. Digital nomads should note that Indonesia introduced a dedicated Nomad Visa in 2023, allowing remote workers to live in Indonesia (including Lombok) for up to 5 years under certain conditions, check imigrasi.go.id for current eligibility and requirements.

Travelers with Criminal Records

Indonesia does not routinely ask about criminal history on arrival cards for tourist entries, and most travelers with past minor convictions will not face issues. However, Indonesia does maintain a prohibition list and can refuse entry at its discretion. Travelers with serious criminal records, drug-related offenses, are at higher risk of being refused entry. If you have concerns, contact the Indonesian embassy in your home country before booking travel.

Dual Nationals

Indonesia does not recognize dual nationality for its own citizens. Foreign nationals holding dual citizenship should enter on the passport of the nationality that gives them the most favorable entry conditions (e.g., if one passport is VoA-eligible and the other is not). Be consistent: use the same passport to enter and exit Indonesia. Indonesian-born dual nationals who have not formally renounced Indonesian citizenship may face complications, consult the Indonesian embassy before traveling.
