Where to Stay in Lombok

Where to Stay in Lombok

Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types

Lombok has a remarkably varied accommodation scene that rewards travelers who look beyond the obvious. From the developed beachfront strip of Senggigi to the fast-rising resort corridor of Mandalika in the south, the island covers every tier, budget guesthouses steps from surf breaks, boutique villas framed by rice paddies, and five-star resorts fronting white-sand beaches. Where to stay in Lombok depends heavily on your priorities: those chasing surf head south to Kuta, beach-bar socializers gravitate toward the Gili Islands, and travelers who want a quieter, more local experience base themselves in Mataram or the north. Prices remain meaningfully lower than Bali across every tier, making this one of Southeast Asia's strongest value propositions for beach holidays. Lombok hotels are increasingly well-developed after significant infrastructure investment in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone. Yet the island still feels unhurried compared to its famous neighbor. Peak-season demand can tighten availability quickly, in the Gili Islands and Kuta Lombok, so booking ahead pays off. Independent travelers should know that most areas require a short ride to reach restaurants or attractions, only Senggigi and Gili Trawangan are walkable. The island's Muslim majority means alcohol is less freely available outside tourist zones, and a respectful attitude toward local customs enhances any stay considerably.
Budget
USD $10, 30 per night for fan-cooled guesthouses, surf camps, and simple bungalows. Air-conditioned budget rooms with private bathrooms typically run $20, 35.
Mid-Range
USD $40, 110 per night. This bracket delivers solid air-conditioning, pools, breakfast included, and staff who speak English well. The sweet spot for most visitors to Lombok.
Luxury
USD $120, 450+ per night for private-pool villas, full spa programs, and beachfront positions. Lombok's luxury tier has expanded significantly since 2022.

Senggigi
Mixed

Senggigi is Lombok's original tourist hub, stretching along a scenic west-coast bay with views across the Lombok Strait to Bali's Mount Agung. The main strip combines beachfront hotels, seafood restaurants, dive shops, and a relaxed evening promenade, more low-key than Bali's Seminyak but fully equipped for comfortable travel. It remains the best base for travelers who want a full range of facilities without venturing too far afield.

First-time visitors to Lombok Couples seeking a beach holiday with infrastructure Divers and snorkelers Travelers using the Gili fast-boat connections
  • Most developed tourist infrastructure on the island, restaurants, tour operators, spas, and ATMs are all within walking distance
  • Spectacular sunset views across the strait toward Bali's Agung volcano
  • Strong variety of accommodation from budget guesthouses to boutique luxury resorts
  • Easy fast-boat access to Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno
  • Beach sand is darker and less postcard-perfect than the white beaches of South Lombok
  • Has lost some energy to newer resort zones, a handful of properties feel dated

Kuta Lombok (Mandalika)
Mixed

Kuta Lombok, entirely distinct from Kuta Bali, is the island's fastest-growing tourist zone, anchored by the government-backed Mandalika Special Economic Zone. The coastline here is spectacular: a series of crescent bays with turquoise water and fine white sand, including Tanjung Aan, Mawun, and Selong Belanak within easy reach. The Mandalika MotoGP International Street Circuit has drawn international brand hotels into the area, though local surf camps and budget warungs still hold their ground.

Surfers (consistent beach and reef breaks nearby) Beach seekers after postcard-perfect white sand MotoGP and motorsport fans Travelers on Lombok itineraries who want a southern-focused trip
  • Some of the finest beaches on the island, Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak are excellent
  • Rapidly improving infrastructure with new international hotels, restaurants, and a new access road from the airport
  • Great surf options from beginner-friendly beach breaks to demanding reef breaks
  • Things to do in Kuta Lombok have expanded dramatically, sunset spots, beach clubs, and watersports are now well-established
  • Still a construction zone in parts. Ongoing development can be noisy
  • Spread out, a scooter or driver is essential to move between beaches and restaurants

Gili Islands
Mixed

The three Gili Islands, Trawangan, Air, and Meno, sit just off Lombok's northwest coast and are accessed by fast boat. Each has a distinct character: Trawangan is the social hub with beach bars and dive schools, Meno is honeymoon-quiet, and Air strikes a balance between both. No motorized vehicles operate on any island, giving all three an unhurried pace that Lombok itself no longer fully offers. The Gilis deserve at least two nights on any Lombok itinerary.

Divers and snorkelers (sea turtle sightings are common) Honeymooners ( Gili Meno) Solo travelers and backpackers (Gili Trawangan social scene) Anyone who wants a car-free beach village experience
  • Outstanding snorkeling directly off the beach, turtles, reef fish, and clear water make this a highlight of any Lombok travel guide
  • No motorbikes or cars create a peaceful atmosphere rare in Indonesian tourism
  • Huge variety of accommodation from $12/night party hostels to private-pool villas
  • Easy day-trip access between all three islands by local cidomo horse cart or water taxi
  • Gili Trawangan can feel overcrowded and loud in peak July, August season
  • Fresh water is expensive and scarce. Long showers are frowned upon
  • Ferry and fast-boat schedules can be unreliable in rough weather, November, March

Mataram
Budget

Mataram is Lombok's provincial capital and the most authentically Indonesian place to base a visit. Business hotels, local warungs, active markets, and the Mayura Water Palace share space here without any concession to the resort aesthetic found elsewhere. Travelers interested in Mataram Lombok things to do, temple circuits, batik workshops, and the Puja Mandala multi-faith complex, will find this the ideal operational base, if arriving on a tight connecting schedule from Mataram International Airport.

Business travelers Culture-first tourists interested in Sasak heritage and markets Budget travelers who prefer local dining over tourist restaurants Travelers in transit requiring airport proximity
  • Closest accommodation zone to Lombok International Airport, good for early-morning arrivals or departures
  • Most authentic local experience on the island with real warungs, traditional markets, and everyday Indonesian life
  • Lowest accommodation prices for the comfort level delivered, international business hotels charge significantly less here than in Bali equivalent
  • Central logistics hub for day trips north to Senggigi, south to Kuta, or east toward Tetebatu
  • No beach access, the closest decent beach is a 30-minute drive north to Senggigi
  • Minimal atmosphere after dark. The city closes early by Southeast Asian standards

North Lombok (Tanjung & Medana)
Luxury

North Lombok remains the island's quietest and most exclusive coastal zone, centered on the fishing village of Tanjung and the secluded Medana Beach. The Gili Islands fast boats depart from Bangsal Harbor here, making this a natural stop for travelers combining mainland Lombok with island-hopping. The beaches are calm, the landscape dramatic, and the handful of properties operating here pitch deliberately at travelers seeking solitude over scene.

Couples looking for a private, uncrowded beach retreat Luxury travelers willing to sacrifice nightlife for natural beauty Travelers combining Gili Island visits with mainland stays Photography-focused trips, the Rinjani backdrop from this coast is extraordinary
  • Effectively zero crowds, some of the calmest beaches on the island are found along this stretch
  • Notable scenery with Mount Rinjani rising directly behind the coast and clear views to the Gili Islands
  • Bangsal Harbor provides the quickest Gili Islands access from any mainland accommodation zone
  • The Oberoi Lombok is one of Indonesia's finest resort experiences and anchors this area's luxury credentials
  • Extremely limited dining and entertainment options outside resort restaurants, self-sufficiency or resort packages are essential
  • Roads north of Tanjung can be slow. Reaching Mataram or the airport takes 1, 1.5 hours

Sembalun & Rinjani Region
Budget

The highland village of Sembalun sits at 1,100 meters on the eastern flank of Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano and Lombok's defining natural landmark. Accommodation here is utilitarian but charming, family-run lodges, organic farms, and basic trekkers' guesthouses form the entire market. Senaru, on the northern approach, offers an alternative base with views down into the caldera. How to get to Tiu Kelep waterfall and the Rinjani crater rim summit route both originate from these villages.

Trekkers attempting the Rinjani summit or crater-lake route Travelers seeking cool highland air and strawberry-farm landscapes Photography enthusiasts drawn to volcano and rice-terrace scenery Budget adventurers happy to forego luxury for genuine wilderness access
  • Outstanding access to Rinjani trekking routes, staying here means a 4am start rather than a 2am departure from the coast
  • Dramatically cooler temperatures than the coastal zones, pleasant sleeping weather year-round
  • Authentic Sasak village life with no resort infrastructure to buffer the experience
  • Strawberry farms, organic vegetable gardens, and green highland scenery make this one of Lombok's most photogenic inland areas
  • Very limited dining options. Most travelers eat at their lodge
  • Roads to Sembalun are winding and take 2+ hours from the west coast, a significant commitment

Accommodation Types

From budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels, here's what's available.

Beach Resort
USD $80, 450/night

Lombok's beach resorts range from established international brands (Accor, Marriott, Oberoi) in Senggigi and Mandalika to smaller boutique properties on North Lombok's secluded bays. Most include pools, open-air restaurants, and watersports desks. The best Lombok hotels in this category front private or semi-private beach stretches.

Best for: Couples, honeymooners, and families who want beach access and full amenities without organizing logistics

Book beachfront rooms specifically, properties often span road or garden positions at the same nominal price. Ask explicitly for sea-view or beachfront allocation at time of booking.
Private Villa
USD $60, 300/night

Private-pool villas have proliferated across Lombok's tourist zones and represent exceptional value compared to Bali equivalents. Two-bedroom villas with private pools are routinely available for $80, 150/night in Senggigi and Kuta, often including daily breakfast and airport transfers. Many are managed by small local operators rather than international platforms.

Best for: Groups of friends, families with children, or couples celebrating special occasions who value privacy over hotel services

Look beyond Booking.com and Airbnb, many Lombok villa operators maintain direct booking websites or WhatsApp lines offering 10, 20% discounts over platform rates.
Surf Camp
USD $30, 90/night (package inclusive)

Concentrated around Kuta Lombok and the south coast breaks, surf camps combine accommodation, daily surf lessons or guided sessions, board rental, and meals into all-inclusive packages. Quality ranges from basic bamboo bungalows to modern air-conditioned rooms. The best camps position guests within walking distance of specific breaks.

Best for: Beginner-to-intermediate surfers on focused surf trips, from May through September when the swell is most consistent

Check which specific break is closest to the camp, Kuta Lombok has multiple breaks of different character, and being at the right camp for your skill level matters significantly.
Guesthouse / Losmen
USD $12, 40/night

Traditional Indonesian guesthouses (losmen) operated by local families represent Lombok's most authentic accommodation option. These offer a private room, often with air-conditioning at the better end, and a simple breakfast. The quality of interaction with the family and local knowledge they provide frequently exceeds what any hotel concierge can offer.

Best for: Budget travelers, solo backpackers, and culture-first visitors who prioritize real feel over amenities

The best losmen rarely appear on major booking platforms, walking a neighborhood in Senggigi or asking at the harbor in Bangsal is still an effective way to find the best family-run options.
Highland Trekking Lodge
USD $15, 70/night

Purpose-built trekking lodges around Sembalun and Senaru cater almost exclusively to Rinjani climbers. Facilities are basic but functional: hot showers (essential at altitude), storage for luggage left behind during the climb, guide booking services, and early breakfasts timed to pre-dawn departures. Some have viewpoint decks with extraordinary caldera views.

Best for: Anyone trekking Rinjani who wants to minimize travel time on summit day and access proper guide-and-porter logistics

Book a lodge that also offers guide rental, guides who know a specific approach well (Sembalun vs Senaru) add significant safety and navigation value on this challenging volcano.

Booking Tips

Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.

Book Gili Islands and Kuta by April for July, August

The Gili Islands and Kuta Lombok have limited room inventory relative to peak demand in July and August. Properties at these locations routinely sell out eight to twelve weeks ahead. The Senggigi and Mataram markets remain softer and can be booked much later. But anyone with fixed dates in peak season should secure the Gili and Kuta nights first and build the rest of the itinerary around them.

Ask Whether Breakfast Is Included Before Comparing Prices

Breakfast inclusion is inconsistent across Lombok hotels, some include a generous buffet, others charge $8, 15 as a compulsory daily add-on that doesn't appear in the headline rate. When comparing two mid-range properties, confirm the total landed price including breakfast before deciding. Local warung breakfasts within walking distance of most hotels cost $2, 4 and are often superior in quality to hotel offerings.

MotoGP Event Weeks Require Six Months Lead Time

The Mandalika International Street Circuit hosts the Indonesian MotoGP round, typically in March, and this single event doubles average hotel rates across all of South and West Lombok. If your travel overlaps with the race weekend, book six months ahead and expect premium rates. If you are not attending the race, avoid the Kuta, Mandalika area entirely that week and stay in Senggigi or North Lombok instead.

Verify Fast-Boat Schedules Before Choosing a Base

The Gili Islands fast boats depart from Bangsal Harbor in North Lombok, not from Senggigi, a distinction that matters considerably if you plan to split time between the mainland and the islands. Senggigi operators run their own faster catamaran service directly from the bay, which commands a premium but saves 45 minutes of transfer time. If island-hopping is a central part of your Lombok itinerary, factor these departure points into accommodation choices.

Check Renovation Status on Older Senggigi Properties

Some of Senggigi's established hotels are showing their age after years of reduced investment during the pandemic period. Before booking a Senggigi hotel you haven't stayed at before, check reviews from the last six months specifically for references to maintenance, hot water reliability, and air-conditioning. Newly renovated properties at the same price bracket will generally deliver a materially better experience.

When to Book

Timing matters for both price and availability.

High Season

Book Gili Islands and Kuta Lombok accommodation for July, August at least 8 weeks ahead. Prices peak during this window and the best mid-range rooms go first. Luxury resorts in North Lombok and Mandalika accept reservations up to a year in advance and reward early commitment with better rates.

Shoulder Season

May, June and September, October offer the best combination of good weather and reasonable availability. Booking 2, 4 weeks ahead is usually sufficient outside school-holiday weekends. This is the optimal window for a Lombok travel guide recommendation: dry-season conditions, fewer crowds, and 10, 25% lower rates than peak.

Low Season

November through March brings the wet season, which reduces demand significantly outside the Mandalika MotoGP week. Walk-in rates become negotiable and many properties offer 20, 40% discounts on published rates. The Gilis are quieter and pleasant in the wet season if you accept that afternoon rain is routine. North swells make some surf breaks more consistent but rough seas can disrupt inter-island ferries.

For a standard 7-day Lombok trip covering Senggigi, the Gilis, and Kuta in the dry season, book all accommodation simultaneously at least 3, 4 weeks ahead. Flexibility across these three zones simultaneously is difficult because each competes for availability independently, locking in all three at once prevents the frustrating scenario of having two of three nights secured while the middle segment remains open.

Good to Know

Local customs and practical information.

Check-in / Check-out
Standard check-in is 2pm, 3pm across Lombok, with 12pm checkout. Most properties will store luggage for early arrivals and late departures at no charge. Early check-in (before noon) typically incurs a half-day fee unless the room was occupied the previous night. In smaller guesthouses, check-in is informal, arriving after 9pm without notice is poor form, and a WhatsApp message to confirm late arrival is expected and appreciated.
Tipping
Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. A 10,000, 20,000 IDR tip (roughly $0.60, 1.25 USD) for room service, guided excursions, or airport drivers is well-received. Porters on Rinjani treks work extremely hard for modest wages, tipping 50,000, 100,000 IDR per day per porter is standard practice and makes a real difference. Restaurant bills in tourist areas often include a 10% service charge. Check before adding more.
Payment
Cash in Indonesian Rupiah remains king outside the larger international resort properties. ATMs are reliable in Senggigi and Mataram but sparse in Sembalun and North Lombok, withdraw adequate cash before leaving the main towns. Most mid-range and luxury hotels accept Visa and Mastercard. But budget guesthouses and local warungs are cash-only. Some newer Gili Trawangan businesses accept digital payments via QRIS, Indonesia's QR payment standard.
Safety
Lombok is generally safe for tourists. The main practical concerns are road safety (scooter rental accidents are the leading cause of tourist injury, wear a helmet and know your limits on unfamiliar mountain roads) and ocean conditions (rip currents at south-coast surf beaches are powerful. Swim only in designated areas or ask locals before entering). Petty theft occurs around Gili Trawangan's busier bars. Keep valuables secured. Tap water is not potable anywhere on the island, use sealed bottles or resort filtered water.
